Resources for Higher Education Leaders
Information to amplify your commitment to first-generation student success.

The Future is FirstGen
First-generation students represent more than half of all undergraduates in the U.S. Yet, first-generation students are graduating far less than their peers. We’re working with hundreds of higher education institutions, practitioners and scholars, foundations, businesses, members of the media, and others committed to first-generation student success to close this completion gap.
Our Advisory Board includes leaders from higher education institutions, foundations, and nonprofit organizations and is committed to increasing support for first-generation students as higher education leaders consider student success efforts in our current uncertain times. We encourage leadership to use and share this information with their teams as a part of institutional decision-making and to rely upon FirstGen Forward as a resource.
FirstGen Statistics
Dedicated first-generation research allows for evidence-based decision-making that is critical to student success.
First-generation students graduate at a rate of 24% versus 59% for continuing-generation students.
There are 8.2 million first-generation undergraduate students; 54% of all undergrads in the U.S.
By 2031, 72% of jobs in the U.S. will require postsecondary education or training.
Facts & Data
Dedicated first-generation research allows for evidence-based decision-making that is critical to student success. FirstGen Forward reports and fact sheets delineate national statistics about the background characteristics, postsecondary experiences, and outcomes of first-generation and continuing-generation college students in the United States. They provide an overview of first-generation students in higher education and a starting point for institutional comparisons.
Institutional Opportunities
FirstGen Forward provides several opportunities to celebrate first-generation student success. The FirstGen Forward Network acknowledges higher education institutions committed to the success of first-generation students. First-Generation College Celebration (FGCC) is an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity by advancing an asset-based, national narrative of these students’ experiences and outcomes.
