November is a special month for first-generation college students across the country, and here at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), we joined in the celebration with a heartwarming event that brought community, connection, and—most importantly—sweet treats!
On November 8, the First-Generation Student Support Team hosted the “Sweets in the Suites” First-Gen Celebration in the Student Life Suite. This event was more than just a fun social gathering—it was a vibrant expression of pride in the journeys and accomplishments of EMU’s first-generation students.
From the moment students walked into the suite, they were welcomed with warm smiles and the aroma of delicious desserts. Tables were lined with cupcakes, cookies, and candies, offering a moment of sweetness during a semester often filled with deadlines and exams. But the most meaningful part of the afternoon? The chance for students to build real connections—with each other and with first-gen faculty and staff.
This event invited first-generation faculty and staff to join the celebration, offering students the rare chance to see themselves reflected in the mentors and leaders who surround them on campus. Conversations flowed naturally as students shared stories, asked questions, and heard encouraging words from faculty and staff who’ve walked a similar path. It was a moment of visibility and validation, showing students that their backgrounds and experiences are not only welcomed at EMU but celebrated.
“Sweets in the Suites” was also a moment to highlight the growing support network available to first-gen students. From advising and academic support services to clubs, counseling, and even the Free Food Room, resources were on display to remind students that they are never alone on this journey.
The celebration was part of EMU’s broader commitment to building a thriving First-Gen Nation on campus. As highlighted in the November edition of the First-Generation Newsletter, we are continually working to strengthen our sense of community and pride. From initiatives like the upcoming JPEG email signature design—created to identify and honor first-gen students, faculty, and staff—to the launch of a new STEM Mentorship Program, our efforts are rooted in connection and belonging.
At its core, “Sweets in the Suites” was a reflection of everything EMU values: inclusion, student support, and meaningful relationships. The laughter, the conversations, and the smiles made it clear—first-gen students at EMU are not only seen, they are celebrated.
We are grateful to everyone who stopped by, and especially to our faculty and staff who took time to connect with students. Together, we’re creating a culture where first-generation students feel empowered to thrive—and where their stories shape the future of our campus community.
To our First-Gen students: We’re so glad you’re here. You belong. And we can’t wait to keep celebrating with you.
