Empowering First-Generation Students: William Paterson University's Commitment to Success

William Paterson University-2

First-generation student initiatives are thriving at William Paterson University since our institution joined the national FirstGen Forward Network. With a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, we have established a comprehensive framework to uplift and empower first-generation students on our campus.

Building a Strong Foundation

To ensure a robust and sustainable support system, our institution has developed a campus-wide First-Gen Steering Committee. This committee brings together representatives from key university divisions, including Enrollment Management, Student Development, Academic Colleges, Counseling, Health and Wellness, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Athletics, Career Development, and Campus Activities, Service and Leadership. Meeting monthly since the spring term, the committee collaborates to brainstorm, strategize, and implement programs that champion the success of first-gen students. Their collective collaboration has helped identify essential resources, event planning, and long-term strategic planning that drive first-gen initiatives forward at our institution.

Guiding Our Mission and Vision

A dedicated First-Gen Committee, separate from the steering committee, has developed a clear vision and mission statement to provide direction and purpose:

Vision Statement: “To empower first-generation students to excel academically, thrive personally, and succeed professionally, fostering a legacy of achievement and inclusion that enriches our entire university community.”

Mission Statement: “Our mission is to support first-generation students in navigating the complexities of college life through comprehensive academic support, financial guidance, and a nurturing community network. We strive to equip each student with the tools needed for academic achievement, personal growth, and career success while fostering an environment where students, faculty, and staff collaboratively create a more inclusive and supportive university experience.”

The committee's work is structured around three guiding pillars:

• Academic Support & Advising

• Financial Guidance & Support

• Community Building & Mentorship

Innovative First-Gen Programs and Initiatives

To bring these pillars to life, the First-Gen Committee, in collaboration with various departments, have introduced several programs:

Brunch and Connect: A networking event providing first-generation students with the opportunity to ask questions, build connections, and engage with peers who share similar experiences.

Paint and Release: A creative and relaxing session aimed to help students de-stress while fostering community connections through creative expression.

Shaping Our Story: A special guest speaker event featuring Desmond Durham Sr., a first-gen alum, who shared his powerful journey of perseverance, vision, and community while navigating college.

Building Legacy Panel: A panel discussion featuring first-gen staff and alumni, offering students guidance on navigating higher education and life after graduation.

Black in the Workplace: Hosted in collaboration with the Career Development Center during Black History Month, this event highlighted the experiences of first-gen Black alumni, offering students insights into professional growth and workplace dynamics.

Upcoming Initiatives & Future Planning

Looking ahead, William Paterson University is excited to expand its first-gen programming with new programs, including:

First-Gen Mentorship Program: Currently in progress, and in partnership with the Career Development Center, this initiative pairs first-generation students with first-gen mentors from diverse professional backgrounds, including accounting, education, and social work, law enforcement, and law offering invaluable career insights.

First-Gen Financial Blueprint: Navigating FAFSA, Billing, and Credit – A collaboration with the Financial Aid Office and Student Enrollment Services to help students complete their FAFSA and gain financial literacy skills.

Career Readiness Seminar: Developed in partnership with the College of Science and Health and the ASPIRE STEM program, this seminar will discuss and review professional success for first-gen students.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Growth and Community

As we continue to strengthen our commitment to first-generation students, William Paterson University is actively brainstorming for the upcoming academic year. Through partnerships and collaborations, we aim to enhance community, belonging, and dedicated spaces for first-gen students. Our goal is to ensure that every first-gen student feels empowered, supported, and celebrated throughout their college journey.

Across the campus, we are shaping a future where first-generation students can achieve their dreams, build their legacies, and inspire the next generation of pioneers. At William Paterson University we are looking forward to more exciting developments as we continue our commitment to championing first-gen student success.
